A shajra is more than a list of revered names. In a Sufi tradition, it records a chain of spiritual teaching: the teachers through whom instruction, companionship, discipline, and authorisation are remembered as reaching back to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

The Shajra-e-Tayyibah published by Al-Hashmi Trust preserves two connected spiritual genealogies: a Qadiriyyah chain and a Shuttariyyah chain. They are presented here from the supplied English translation and the two-page Al-Hashmi Shijra scans. This page is an educational guide to that tradition; it does not claim to provide an independent historical authentication of every link.

Spiritual lineage and family descent are different

The word shajra can be used for more than one kind of genealogy. A spiritual lineage records the transmission of teaching and authorisation from guide to disciple. A hereditary genealogy records biological descent through a family.

The supplied book contains both kinds. Its Qadiriyyah and Shuttariyyah lists are spiritual chains. A later section gives a family genealogy, but several names in the English translation are marked for verification. For that reason, the family tree is not reproduced on this page. Keeping the two categories separate protects the meaning of each.

Historical setting of the Shuttariyyah

The supplied Shajra says that the order was earlier known by names including Ishqiyyah, Bistamiyyah, and Tayfuriyyah. An academic account in Encyclopaedia Iranica similarly records Ishqiyyah in Iran and Bistamiyyah in Asia Minor, and explains that the name Shattari became established in India around Shah Abdullah Shattari. The name is associated in the tradition with swiftness on the spiritual path.

Shah Abdullah travelled in India and settled at Mandu. Historical accounts differ about the year of his death, so no single date is imposed here. The transmitted Shattari chain then passes through teachers including Shaykh Qadan Shattari, Abu al-Fath Hidayat Allah, Shaykh Zuhur Haji, and Muhammad Ghawth of Gwalior.

Muhammad Ghawth became one of the best-known authors of the order. His Jawahir-i Khamsa discusses worship, spiritual discipline, invocation, and practices associated with the Shattari path. In the Al-Hashmi chain, the succession continues through Sheikh Wajihuddin Alavi of Gujarat, Sayyid Abdullah Husayni, and Hazrat Hashim Pir Dastagir. This helps explain the historical movement remembered by the community from northern and central India through Gujarat and into the Deccan.

Where the two chains meet

The Qadiriyyah and Shuttariyyah chains follow different early lines of transmission, but the lists preserved in the Shajra converge in India. Both include Abu al-Fath Hidayat Allah, Shah Zuhur Haji, Muhammad Ghawth of Gwalior, Sheikh Wajihuddin Alavi, Sayyid Abdullah Husayni, and Hazrat Hashim Pir Dastagir before continuing through the Hashmi succession.

This convergence explains the compound description Qadiriyyah-Shuttariyyah. It remembers more than one authorised spiritual affiliation within the heritage transmitted by Al-Hashmi Trust.

How to read the names responsibly

The repetitions in the later part of the chains are not typographical errors. Several generations bore the same names. Readers should therefore avoid merging people solely because their names resemble one another.

Honorific titles also vary across manuscripts, languages, and modern spellings. Ghawth, Ghaus, and Ghous, for example, may identify the same name in different transliteration systems. This page uses a consistent, readable English form while preserving the order of the source.

A shajra is normally recited and preserved with reverence. On an educational website, it should also be accompanied by transparent source labels. Devotion and careful scholarship can support each other when the page distinguishes what the tradition transmits, what historians independently document, and what still needs verification.

A chain expressed through learning and service

The supplied book does not end with names. Its “Essential Instructions” joins spiritual affiliation to daily prayer, truthful conduct, the rights of other people, charity, service to the poor, care for orphans and widows, support for the oppressed and sick, self-examination, and the pursuit of religious learning.

That emphasis gives the Golden Chain its practical meaning. A lineage is honoured not only by remembering its teachers, but also by carrying forward worship, knowledge, good character, compassion, and responsible service.
